One of the best things about having a capsule wardrobe is always feeling like you have something to wear. But what’s the best way to plan your outfits and make sure everything in your capsule wardrobe looks good together and that you do always have something to wear?
The answer is the outfit formula!
I discovered this concept of the outfit formula from the book The Curated Closet and it completely changed the way I think about outfit and closet building.
So, today, let’s talk about spring outfit formulas and one of my favorite ones to wear right now.
Before we talk about the outfit though, let’s review exactly what an outfit formula is and why it makes planning outfits easier.
the outfit formula
An outfit formula is a pretty basic concept you probably can guess just from the name. It’s a way to break an outfit into distinct pieces and one combination.
I always start with finding an outfit I like on Pinterest or Instagram. I then break it down by what’s included at a high level:
- the type of top (stripes, long sleeves, long sleeve stripes, white blouse, etc.)
- style of bottoms (wide leg pants, high waisted shorts, chinos, midi skirt, etc.)
- the type of shoes (sandals, boots, block heel, converse)
- then any type of accessory (boho style hat, tights, woven circle bag, blazer)
Pretty simple! Then once you break it down into really clear pieces, you can find more inspiration of that exact combo and recreate it yourself. When you go to plan your wardrobe, you can start with a few outfit formulas you want to wear to help choose pieces.
Spring Outfit Formula: Wide Leg Jeans, Stripes, and Huaraches
Now onto spring outfit formulas!
This one consists of wide leg jeans, any striped top, and my huaraches sandals.
I love this outfit formula because it’s comfortable, casual yet chic, work appropriate, and easy to wear. I plan on switching out this shirt with a striped t-shirt and striped tank top when it gets warmer.
Why it works:
I think wide leg jeans instantly add an extra sense of style to any outfit. Especially one that consists of a pretty simple t-shirt. The huaraches sandals also add a nice summery feel and casual chicness. I also love the denim, brown, blue, and white color combination!
An outfit formula is great place to start when planning out either your outfits or seasonal wardrobe. I have a few spring outfit formulas that guided my spring capsule and purchases I made which I’m excited to share in upcoming posts.
