When I think of linen I think of bright spring days, warm summer weather, light pastels, and summer sandals. It’s one of my favorite fabrics to wear despite it’s wrinkling tendencies. If anything, the wrinkling makes linen all the more charming. Despite the typically summer aesthetic assigned to this fabric, it can be worn throughout the year. It’s all in the styling and fabric color.
I didn’t own any linen until I made the leap into slow fashion. I actually never even paid attention to what fabric I wore before I started this blog. Synthetic, natural, mystery, who cares? It’s affordable and looks nice. It’s actually so interesting looking back. Because now a lot of my love for an item is attributed to the quality of the fabric it’s made from.
Now that I’ve curated a few linen pieces, I don’t want to store them away for warm weather. I want to wear them now and often. So, how can a linen item be styled during the colder months? Today, I’m covering some simple ideas for wearing your linen dresses this winter.
Styling a Linen Dress in Winter
1. Add Dark Tights
I recently found this notPerfectLinen linen dress and have been trying to finding many different ways to wear it. My favorite has been adding a pair of black or sweater tights. It is one of the easiest and quickest ways to take a dress from summer to winter, spring to fall. Pair them with a pair of boots, black flats, or as I’m styling here, a pair of clogs. This would be more of an indoor look for winter. But it’s quite perfect for my office temperatures. Which leads us to the next addition.
2. Add a Cozy Sweater
I couldn’t wear this outfit outside without the addition of this sweater. It takes this outfit from slightly winter ready to fully appropriate. I do want to add that the color of linen does play a pretty major role in seasonal appropriateness. You might be able to get away with soft pastels, however, darker tones (non-pastel) like greys, greens, blues, oranges, or reds work better. Throw a sweater on top of your dress and you’re ready for the day.
3. Add a Wool Coat
This step is pretty intuitive. And excuse my puffiness in this photo. I just love how a grey wool coat looks with this entire ensemble and wanted to share for inspiration. For me, it really pulls together the entire outfit and makes it ready for a cold day of activities.
I hope that helps create some style inspiration for taking your linen from warm to cold! I’m constantly trying to find ways to make the items in my closet multi-seasonal. It’s always a fun challenge.
