The weather has cooled down to a consistent temperature under sixty degrees in New York. Which means it’s officially time for layering and cool weather clothes to come out from storage. Today’s post I’m sharing a simple way to take your summer clothes into cooler weather with ideas to layer a summer dress for fall.
I recently went into my closet to pack away my summer clothes in an attempt to be more organized. I wanted to reduce the amount of time to get ready in the morning by taking away some of the clothes only taking up space. However, I thought it was such a shame all of these clothes weren’t going to be getting much wear now that the the seasons have changed.
So instead of putting these clothes in a bin out of sight, I went through and kept out what I thought could still be worn this fall with layers. The goal is to get as much wear from all my clothes as possible and adding layers is an easy way to do so with warm weather items.
Today’s summer to fall outfit is for inspiration to layer a summer dress for fall. To start with my layering process, here are few ways I first thought to style this dress and probably will do this fall:
- Tights and a chunky sweater
- A sweater and boots
- A shall, tights, and flats
- A shall and boots
I eventually chose this white turtleneck and then styled my outfit from there! I honestly had no idea how this would even look together but I tried it on together and ending up loving it. I’m feeling much more adventurous lately with my layering.
Layer a Summer Dress for Fall with a Light Turtleneck & Plaid Scarf
Why this Look Works
This denim dress fits me loosely already. So, there’s room for a turtleneck underneath. This look works because the denim dress is not form fitting and the turtleneck is made from a lightweight material and is form fitting. The neckline of the dress is low which allows the turtleneck part to pop through without look overbearing or stuff. The white also adds a nice bright pop to the outfit!
Do use a lightweight turtleneck. Also, choose a dress for layering that has loose short sleeves or is sleeveless. Do make sure the dress fits easily on top of the turtleneck without feeling too tight or forced.
Don’t wear a form fitting dress or chunky turtleneck sweater. The dress needs to fit comfortably on top. The lightweight turtlenecks are tighter and will hug your body nicely allowing a dress to sit right on top without bunching.
Adding a turtleneck and plaid scarf is an effortless and simple way to layer a summer dress for fall. While there are certainly items in our wardrobes that unfortunately we can’t get year round use out of, it’s always nice to be creative and find new ways to wear our seasonal items outside of their intended season.
