A few weeks ago I started another “3 Ways to Wear” post series featuring a plaid blazer for plaid blazer outfit inspiration. The fall 10×10 challenge started and I wasn’t able to complete the series until today. The first two ways incorporated blue jeans with a t-shirt and black jeans with a simple sweater. Today’s way captures a different part of the wardrobe: the black dress.
My goal of “3 Ways to Wear” post series is to provide simple style inspiration for closet staples. Dressing simply isn’t always simple. Over complication of outfits can be a real hurdle to get passed.
So, the focus of today is simply styling a plaid blazer, fitted or oversized, either works for this outfit. The blazer I’m wearing here is on the oversized spectrum. It’s simple to wear with jeans and solid tops but what about a black dress you’d usually save for nighttime events?
Style a Blazer with a Simple Black Dress & Black Flats
Let’s start by analyzing this black dress. It’s a short sleeve flowy mini dress. I added the belt to make the dress more structured and not look too big for my frame. It’s a dress I allocate for nights out. I’ve actually never worn it in the daytime by itself.
Adding the blazer gives this dress a more polished and put together appearance. It makes the dress more stylish. It’s not so much a formal, black dress for dinner or drinks once I put a plaid blazer on top of it. The black flats dress it down a bit too since they’re so simple and casual.
When styling this plaid blazer outfit make sure to pay attention to proportions. If you wear a more loose fitting black dress, stick to a fitted blazer and vice versa. You could wear a fitted blazer and fitted black dress but if you’re trying to stick to a casual, laid back style, a fitted blazer and fitted black dress can quickly start to lean towards the business casual side of things.
It’s all about balance!
A plaid blazer is a classic and versatile to have in your closet this fall. You can wear it in the winter under a large coat for extra warmth and in early spring for cool weather. It’s one of those things you can wear year after year and never worry it will go out of style.
